I know Leno's ratings from the tonight show belay this a bit... but perhaps people are just bored/tired of the "vanilla" comedy Leno has been peddling. Network execs always seem to want to dumb stuff down, down, down.

Now Craig Ferguson... his stuff can be a roller coaster of zaniness!

to my thinking the presence of the Jay Leno show at 10 reflects something that has happened more strongly than it predicts anything that will happen. which is to say it reflects the incredible diminution of network television.

is this retrenchment on the part of the networks? is it simply the next logical step after the (relative) success of cheap 'unscripted' tv during the rest of prime time?

my thought is that the networks don't know what they are anymore. what is their function in such a media diverse environment? is there room for four?
