Oh how I miss the day of drawn out conversation in life and business!
Instead of two hour chats by forced physical constraints modern technology has ushered in the stunted conversation. Dropped cell connections, Twitter, instant messaging, emoticons, email clients, reduced lunch hours….. All of these cut the conversation up. There’s no flow anymore. Just chunks.
Flow is so essential to forming complex thought and behavior.
I’m certain stunted conversations are not optimal for human thought. Overtime I worry if we over come this. Then again maybe the complete thoughts and conversations we think we have aren’t all that important…..
What say you?

Some people protect the flow with some other people. I suspect those who value thought and its progression have selected others with whom they think complete conversations are worth having. Sooner or later over some length of time we cannot now know, there will be a loss of enough information gathering through shared conversations outside of one’s intellectual, social or economic comfort zone that the circle will have to broaden again for more drawn out conversations with a broader base of people. Until then, constriction of thought continues and contraction of thought broadening interactions will too.
I just stopped what I was doing to read this and now I’m posting to Twitter.
In all seriousness, I’ve come to realize that I cannot have deep valuable conversations without turning off all the noise. I work in two hour chunks two times per day on a product or problem. I work with one of two people in a room here at work or somewhere quiet. It’s the only way.
